It’s crazy how unpredictable the weather has been the past few weeks. The only thing you could expect when you leave the house in the morning is that it will definitely be sunny and it will also most definitely pour. The thing is, it’s hard to estimate when either would happen.

I take a 30 minute bus ride to work. I leave the house with my sunglasses on. The sun is up and I’m glad I put on sunscreen. I get on the bus and 10 minutes after, it starts to rain…heavily! So I lose the glasses and put on a sad face. Rain makes it more difficult to move about.

One time during lunch break, it was raining very heavily. The wind was blowing hard and you’d occasionally hear thunder. There was no sign of the rain slowing down, so I decided to brave the splashes of water from the side of the road and the wind that was strong enough to ruin my umbrella to buy lunch. I was at the food center, lining up to buy soup, damp. This food center by the way is almost just across the street. After buying my soup, I made my way back to the office and guess what, the rain had stopped and the sun was out. You’d have never guessed that it had just rained, if not only for the wet road, and my wet clothes hehehe!

The weather is that unpredictable here in Singapore. So I always make sure I never leave home without an umbrella :)

What's All the Fuss About?

posted 3 weeks ago

It’s a quarter past 9 in the evening and you’re enjoying a quiet time after a grueling day at work. All of a sudden you hear yelling, they come from inside our room.

You get curious, maybe even panic, you hear voices of grown men screaming at each other. You begin to wonder what the fuss is about.

One of the guys yelling and giving out directions is my husband. He is on Skype with his friends playing DOTA. I will never understand how playing DOTA let’s them blow off steam. Listening to them play even stresses me out.  When it comes to guys and games, you play to win. You don’t play just for the fun of it. You have to be in it to win it. Otherwise, you’re merely wasting time.

Sometimes, the way they take the game too seriously amuses me but there are times when everyone loses their temper that it annoys the hell out of me. They argue about items and farming and stuff and it seems like the next time they play they fight over the same things again. With the way they take playing DOTA so seriously, I’m glad they don’t hold grudges like girls do. If they did, with the way they yell at each other, I doubt they’d still play the same game at all.

Oh, and this is why I don’t play DOTA anymore. I don’t see how I can de-stress by playing this game.

Grinding, But Not On the Dance Floor

posted 1 month ago

Grindin'

I went to bed early while my head was throbbing last night. Then I woke up early today with a fever. I stayed in bed just before noon time. I couldn’t help myself, I just had to check my office email. There were tons, and they weren’t good. I knew at those moments that the cause of my severe headaches and fever was stress.

Burnout.

I didn’t have to see a doctor for that, well I had to see the doctor despite my not wanting to leave home, having to leave the house kind of beats the purpose of having the medical leave.

Anyway, I did.  The doctor gave me not 1 but 2 days to rest. My eyes nearly popped out of my head, they’re a bit puffy but if I were completely healthy, the doctor would have noticed my eyes widen in shock. I always have the option to go to the office tomorrow, no one’s stopping me. But dude, doctor’s orders man.

The nice doctor had no idea thoughts of the problems I have to face at work came rushing inside my head and while he was talking to me. If I miss a day of work it’s like it gets back at me by giving me more than the usual problems I face on while I’m actually at the office.

During the check-up, the doctor checked my temperature, 37 degress, blood pressure, a little low. I always seem to have low blood pressure when I’m sick or under a lot of stress. He could also tell I was under a lot of stress. The areas on my head that he pressed on were the pressure points that indicated stress. I told him the bone under my cheekbone near my temples, he told me that I grinded my teeth. Grinding of teeth is also caused by stress!

The last time I went to my dentist she asked me to check with my husband if I grind my teeth when I sleep. I asked him and he said that I don’t. Just recently though, I found out that I do grind my teeth but not while I’m sleeping, I do it when I’m running around the office, debugging code, or just about every time I think about work.

Stress. Life is less colorful without it.

While resting after jogging tonight, I downloaded and installed Tumblrette for the iPhone. It’s a pretty cool app Ü I need to get some rest soon because tomorrow’s going to be a busy day and I’m just hoping things will turn out alright. Ü I’m reminding myself to say a prayer tonight for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. May God be with us all.

I Hear Crickets in the Background

Home alone tonight and the most exciting thing that happened is an email notification. Boohoo…it’s just a newsletter from XML :(

Yeah I’m the type of person who asks to be sent newsletters by XML, Oracle and the like.

Dirty Finger
When we first moved in to our new office, our main door had the traditional lock. It was a bit more secure than the average lock since we had to maneuver the keys and eventually find the need to master the locking and unlocking technique of that particular office door.
Unfortunately, this technique wasn’t too convenient for everyone. The reason behind this was that a normal day at work would involve going in and out of the office (to go to the restroom, to go to meetings, to have lunch, to go to the main office) for several times. This proving to be quite a hassle, led us to request for different locking mechanism for our door. For some time we even settled on leaving the door ajar.
Finally last week they installed fingerprint scanners at our door. We had to get our fingerprint scanned whenever we leave or enter our office. I knew I was going to have a little trouble with it because of my sweaty hands. I always get requested to rescan my print whenever I register for something. The lines on my fingers are probably too shallow, I don’t know. It’s such a hassle also because whenever my fingerprint gets rejected, it makes this distinct beeping noise which gets everyone’s attention, so it pretty much just works like a doorbell for me.
You could hear the beeping sound that would indicate that my fingerprint was denied access. Then you could hear me attempt for about five to seven times. Lucky for me, my colleague took pity on me and opened up the door for me.
I honestly think it’s the system at all, not everybody seems to have the same problem with it. I suspect that it’s because of the sweat and the different fingerprints already smeared on the scanner (spreading virus faster hehe).  I tried wiping my hands and the scanner with tissue before I place my finger but I still get the same results. LOL. I just feel sorry for my officemates by the door that will have to open it for me when I’m denied access.

Ahhh…Laundry, one of the household chores I seem to do most lovingly for the hubster. Today I prepared lunch for him to take to work. It feels really good to do something as simple as cooking or ironing clothes just to make sure he’s well-rested and taken care of. The wives’ duties belong to one astronomically long list. Could the list for husbands’ duties be as long?

I’m missing Cebu even more today. I wish I could roll Cebu into a ball and keep it in my pocket, take it everywhere I go.
